U.S. Department of Transportation to Launch “Safe Trip-21” at the 15th World Congress on ITS
Safe Trip-21 is a first-phase demonstration of work done by the U.S. Department of Transportation (U.S. DOT) in support of Vehicle Infrastructure Integration (VII). The initiative builds upon research into the use of electronic information, navigation, and communications technologies to prevent accidents and reduce congestion by providing drivers with real-time safety warnings, traffic and transit information, and advanced navigational tools.
Safe Trip-21 will demonstrate how ITS technology can improve safety and enhance the travel experience using readily available wireless communications devices. In addition, SafeTrip-21 will introduce new technologies designed to share valuable, real-time information to help prevent vehicle crashes and alleviate congestion in both urban and rural settings.
The U.S. DOT has partnered with the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) to establish the initial SafeTrip-21 test site in the San Francisco Bay area. Caltrans’ partners include the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC), the University of California-Partners for Advanced Transit and Highways (PATH), the California Center for Innovative Transportation (CCIT), Nokia, Inc., NAVTEQ, Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority and Nissan.
As part of the World Congress, you will have a unique hands-on opportunity to witness and experience these interactive communications technologies that will improve safety and enhance the travel experience, as we work to advance innovative technologies that will ensure personal freedom and economic vitality for a nation on the move!
